Kerryn Assaizky is a freelance film and television editor living and loving in Johannesburg. Primarily a documentary editor with a strong feel for narrative, she’s brought her own particular quirk to projects ranging from 2min inserts to feature length documentaries. She collects antique typewriters and finds it odd referring to herself in the third person which is why this bio is so short…

The original cut of Tod Browning’s Freaks was lost when the studio deemed it too horrific for cinema going audiences to be subjected to. What a pity… 83 years later you can get a glimpse at the film that ruined its Director’s career.

This 5 minute cut features music from Akasa 455 – Thermal Compound (with permission).

Aerial Africa, Aquavision for Smithsonian Channel 2015/2016

Editor – 2 x 60 mins

Aerial Africa reveals the fascinating stories you’d never find if you weren’t in the air. This series highlights the natural wonders of the southern African landscape, and considers humanity’s impact on it. From Namibia’s Fish River Canyon to the sprawling megatroplis of Johannesburg, diamond divers at Port Nolloth to herds of buffalo and elephant on Chef’s Island, this an adventure for the mind and for the senses

The Giant Flag, FCB/ The Giant Flag Trust, 2015

Editor – 26 x 1min

The Giant Flag is a legacy project of vast proportions, a celebration of the spirit of South Africa, her land and her people. We’re building a flag made up of millions of coloured desert plants, and a four-megawatt solar field, on a tract of land that was previously completely barren. Effectively viewable from space and the size of 66 soccer fields, the Giant Flag will not only claim its place as a natural wonder, but also as a new model of economic stimulus for previously disadvantaged communities. Job creation, clean energy and tourism come together in a world first green innovation project!

Editor – feature length documentary

Two Pondo cousins from a close-knit rural community have opposing plans for their homeland on South Africa’s Wild Coast. Nonhle wants to preserve their traditional lifestyle, homes and graves through eco-tourism while her older cousin Madiba plans to mine their land for titanium to create jobs and infrastructure. Madiba supports the South African Government’s plans to build a Wild Coast tolled highway through their land which some believe is routed along the coast to transport the titanium minerals.

Meanwhile, their Pondo King and Queen are dethroned by Government after speaking out against the developments. To fight for their throne the Pondo Royals must take Government to court who have replaced the King with his pro-mining nephew.

Miners Shot Down, Uhuru Productions 2014

Film Editing by: Kerryn Assaizky, Menno Boerema, Megan Gill, Steen Johannessen, Reuben van der Hammen

In August 2012, mineworkers in one of South Africa’s biggest platinum mines began a wildcat strike for better wages. Six days later the police used live ammunition to brutally suppress the strike, killing 34 and injuring many more. Using the point of view of the Marikana miners, Miners Shot Down follows the strike from day one, showing the courageous but isolated fight waged by a group of low-paid workers against the combined forces of the mining company Lonmin, the ANC government and their allies in the National Union of Mineworkers.

What emerges is collusion at the top, spiralling violence and the country’s first post-apartheid massacre. South Africa will never be the same again.
